Ciane river

During my Ciane River Bike Tour you will discover the myth of Ciane and Kore and the charming Cyperus Papyrus

The Natural Reserve of Ciane River and Saline of Siracusa was established in 1984 aimed at safeguarding the papyrus along the course of the Ciane river and at conserving the environment of the “Saline”. Inside the reserve there is a cycle/pedestrian ring path of about 12 km.

Reason for protection and characterizing sign of the Egyptian papyrus of Syracuse is the fact that for a very long time this plant was extremely rare, even being scarce in the delta of the river Nile (the place where its fame reached its peak), and although today the can be found abundant in the most humid areas of Africa (but also in those of the United States of America), the small watercourses that surround the city of Arezzo remain the only place in Europe (to which is added also the Egyptian papyrus from the Etna slopes of Fiumefreddo di Sicilia, in the Catania area) where it continues to grow spontaneously, forming large colonies.

The name “Ciane” derives from the Greek cyanos, κυανός, which means “blue-green”, and recalls the particular color of the waters and papyrus of these areas.
